The 2008 Acura MDX (second generation, YD2 chassis) is powered by a 3.7L V6 (J37A1) engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) and the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system. This guide provides the complete factory service schedule based on the Maintenance Minder system, which replaces traditional fixed odometer intervals.
> CRITICAL ENGINE DESIGN: The 3.7L V6 uses a timing belt on an interference engine. If the belt breaks at speed, the pistons will strike the valves, causing catastrophic engine damage.
Key Takeaways
- The 2008 MDX uses the Maintenance Minder system instead of fixed odometer intervals. The vehicle's computer monitors driving conditions and displays alphanumeric codes (A, B, 1-6) when specific services are due.
- The 3.7L V6 uses a timing belt, NOT a chain. Replacement is required when Code 4 appears (typically at 105,000 miles). If you regularly drive in very high temperatures (over 110°F), very low temperatures (under -20°F), or tow a trailer, replace every 60,000 miles.
- Brake fluid replacement is strictly time-sensitive. Independent of the Maintenance Minder, Acura requires brake fluid replacement every 3 years regardless of mileage.
- SH-AWD rear differential fluid replacement is critical. If you regularly drive in mountainous areas at very low speeds or tow a trailer, change differential fluid at 7,500 miles, then every 15,000 miles.
- If no service message appears within 12 months of reset, change the engine oil at least once per year.
- Inspect idle speed every 160,000 miles.
- Adjust valves during services A, B, 1, 2, or 3 only if they are noisy.

Timing Belt – The Most Critical Service
The J37A1 V6 engine requires timing belt replacement on a strict schedule. This is the single most important maintenance item for the 2008 MDX.
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine type | Interference engine |
| Replacement trigger | Maintenance Minder code 4 |
| Standard replacement | When Code 4 appears, typically at 105,000 miles |
| Severe condition interval | If driving regularly in very high temperatures (over 110°F), very low temperatures (under -20°F), or towing: replace every 60,000 miles |
| Canada severe interval | 100,000 km (approximately 62,000 miles) due to cold temperatures |
| Water pump | Replace with timing belt (driven by timing belt) |
| Manufacturer's time recommendation | The Owner's Manual does not specify a time interval; the MID determines replacement timing |
| Compatible aftermarket belt | Dayco 95329 (rated for 105,000 miles) |
| Manufacturer-rated interval | 105,000 miles |
The Timing Belt Age Debate—What the Owner's Manual Actually Says
The 2008 MDX Owner's Manual states: "Replace timing belt and inspect water pump" when Code 4 appears. The manual does not specify a time-based interval (e.g., "every 7 years").
> *"the dealer's tell people to change it at 105k or 7 yrs. there is NOTHING in the OM that states this. this has been a topic of discussion on the 3G TL side a lot and debated endlessly."* — TLtrigirl, AcuraZine
However, many dealers and specialists recommend replacement at 7 years due to rubber degradation, and most owners agree with being cautious: *"I'd say yes to either. Play it safe and do it".*
Community experiences:
| Owner Experience | Mileage/Age | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Nooch34 | 75,000 miles | "I did mine as preventative maintenance around 75,000 miles. No issue, but because I was doing in advance, I worked out a deal with the dealership to get it done for a reasonable amount." |
| An 06 MDX owner | 140,000 miles | Snapped timing belt—resulted in catastrophic engine damage: "$700 sounds a lot better than $7000 right lol" |
Why Timing Belt Replacement Is Critical
The J37A1 engine is an interference engine. If the timing belt breaks, the pistons will strike the valves, resulting in bent valves, damaged pistons, and typically requiring complete engine replacement.
Owner Guidance for Timing Belt Service (The "Full Job")
When replacing the timing belt, replace these components simultaneously due to overlapping labor. Community-recommended items:
- Timing belt itself (Dayco 95329 or OE equivalent)
- Timing belt tensioner
- Water pump (driven by the timing belt)
- Drive belts (accessory/serpentine belt)
- Engine coolant (requires draining to replace water pump)
- Spark plugs (Code 4 includes spark plug replacement)
- Valve clearance inspection (adjust only if noisy)
Cost-Saving Tips from Owners
- *"Honda dealership or local shops can do it cheaper. Even comes out cheaper if you purchase the parts yourself to take to a local shop"*
- *"You can try to negotiate while you still have the ability to rather than if it breaks and you have no choice"*
- *"If you sign up/register at most Honda and Acura dealerships, they will inform you of timing belt service sales & discounts"
Spark Plug Replacement
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Replacement trigger | Maintenance Minder code 4 (coincides with timing belt) |
| Inspect valve clearance | Code 4; adjust only if noisy |
| Type | Iridium or platinum long-life plugs (OEM-specified NGK or Denso) |
| Quantity | 6 plugs |
| Reference interval | Approximately 105,000 miles |
Owner Guidance: Replace spark plugs during the timing belt service—the labor overlaps significantly. Use only OEM-specified spark plugs. The valve clearance inspection at this time is also important; tight exhaust valves can lead to burned valves even without making noise.
Engine Coolant Service
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Replacement trigger | Maintenance Minder code 5 |
| Coolant type | Acura Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 (blue, premixed 50/50) |
| Capacity | Approximately 8.5 liters |
Owner Guidance: Do not use generic green coolant. Honda/Acura Type 2 coolant is specifically formulated for aluminum engine components. If coolant appears dark or contaminated, replace it sooner regardless of the Maintenance Minder. For a 2008 MDX that has never had a coolant flush, it is likely overdue by age (17+ years).
Brake Fluid Replacement
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Replacement requirement | Every 3 years, independent of the Maintenance Minder |
| Specified fluid | Honda Heavy Duty Brake Fluid DOT 3 |
| Temporary substitute | DOT 3 or DOT 4 from a sealed container |
| DOT 5 warning | NOT compatible – never use DOT 5 fluid (silicone-based) |
Why it's critical: Brake fluid is hygroscopic—it absorbs moisture from the air over time. This moisture lowers the fluid's boiling point (causing brake fade under hard braking) and promotes internal corrosion of the brake system.
Owner Guidance: A complete system flush (draining old fluid from each caliper) is required. Topping off the reservoir is not sufficient. For a 2008 MDX, the brake fluid should have been replaced 5-6 times by now (3-year intervals).
> *"brake fluid = every 3 years (so for an '08, it should have been done in '11, '14, due again in '17)"* — AcuraZine member
DIY tip: *"Get a turkey baster and suck out some of your power steering fluid, then refill with new (same amount). Jack up the front of the mdx a little, to take some weight off of the front tires, start the engine and slowly turn the wheels all the way left and right 3 times. Stop the engine and check/fill the reservoir. You won't use a whole qt, of power steering fluid".*
Transmission & Transfer Case Service
The 2008 MDX is equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Specified fluid | Honda ATF-DW1 (or ATF-Z1 equivalent) |
| Replacement trigger | Maintenance Minder code 3 |
| Standard interval | When MID indicates (approximately every 30,000-60,000 miles) |
| Transfer case fluid | Replace with transmission fluid when Code 3 appears |
Critical Warning: Using any transmission fluid other than Honda ATF-DW1 can damage the transmission. Do not use Dexron/Mercon fluids.
Owner Guidance for Transmission Service
The proper method for a complete fluid exchange is the "3x method" (drain, fill, drive through all gears, repeat three times). This is the dealer-recommended procedure and does not use a power flush machine.
A single drain and refill replaces approximately 3.1 liters of the total system capacity. Transmission service should be performed when the Maintenance Minder displays Code 3.
DIY tip: *"Check your tranny fluid. It should not be dark brown or black. On a budget, do 2 gravity drain/fill/drives =7 qts for $52. You turn the wrench".*
SH-AWD Rear Differential Service (4WD-Specific)
The SH-AWD (Super Handling-All Wheel Drive) system has a rear differential with clutches that require specific fluid and regular maintenance. This is critical for 4WD models only.
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Replacement trigger | Maintenance Minder code 6 |
| Fluid type | Acura AWD DPSF (Dual Pump System Fluid) |
| Standard interval | Follow Maintenance Minder (approximately every 30,000 miles) |
| Severe condition interval | 7,500 miles, then every 15,000 miles |
Severe Condition Requirement – Important Note
From the 2008 MDX Owner's Manual:
> *"Driving in mountainous areas at very low vehicle speeds or trailer towing results in higher level of mechanical (shear) stress to fluid. This requires differential fluid changes more frequently than recommended by the Maintenance Minder. If you regularly drive your vehicle under these conditions, have the differential fluid changed at 7,500 miles (12,000 km), then every 15,000 miles (24,000 km)."*
This applies to many MDX owners who:
- Live in mountainous regions (Rockies, Appalachians, West Coast ranges)
- Regularly tow trailers, boats, or campers
- Frequently drive on steep, winding roads
- Use the MDX for heavy-duty family hauling with frequent AWD engagement
Owner Guidance for Differential Service
- *"Regarding the transfer case fluid & differential fluid...I changed mine at 71K miles and the old stuff was just as clear as the new stuff, give or take a shade of yellow"*
- *"Diff and Transfer < DIY it! Is very easy to change no need to pay the stealership"*
DIY tip: "you can do them all yourself, for under $200 with a small set of sockets, ratchet, and torque wrench".
Fluid Warning: Use only Acura AWD DPSF (Dual Pump System Fluid). Do not use standard gear oil or VTM-4 fluid—these will damage the SH-AWD clutches.
Drive Belt Inspection
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Inspection trigger | Maintenance Minder code 2 (inspect drive belt) |
| Replacement | Replace if cracked, frayed, glazed, or making a squealing noise on startup |
| Typical lifespan | 60,000-90,000 miles |
Owner Guidance: The MDX uses a single serpentine drive belt. Replace the drive belt during timing belt service—it must be removed to access the timing belt anyway, so there's minimal additional labor cost.
Air Filters (Engine & Cabin)
| Filter | Replacement Trigger | Severe Conditions Note |
|---|---|---|
| Engine air cleaner element | Maintenance Minder code 2 | If driving in dusty conditions, replace every 15,000 miles (24,000 km) regardless of Minder |
| Cabin air filter (dust/pollen filter) | Maintenance Minder code 2 | If driving in urban areas with high soot concentrations, replace every 15,000 miles (24,000 km) |
Owner Guidance: Both filters are inexpensive and can be replaced without special tools. The cabin air filter is behind the glove box; replacing it annually improves interior air quality.
> *"filters are easy, buy the filters and DIY. dealer will charge an hour of labor to do a 20 min job"*
Valve Clearance Inspection & Adjustment
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Inspection trigger | Maintenance Minder code 4 (timing belt service) |
| Adjustment | Adjust the valves only if they are noisy during services A, B, 1, 2, or 3 |
Owner Guidance: While the manual says "adjust only if noisy," many Acura specialists recommend checking clearances at 100,000-120,000 miles regardless. The J37 engine is known for valve clearance changes over time. Exhaust valves tend to tighten and may not make noise even when dangerously tight. This service has minimal additional labor during timing belt service but would be significant if done separately.
Severe Driving Conditions Summary
The following severe condition requirements are explicitly stated in the 2008 MDX Owner's Manual:
| Condition | Component | Required Action |
|---|---|---|
| Mountain driving at very low speeds or towing | Rear differential fluid | Change at 7,500 miles, then every 15,000 miles |
| Regular driving in very high temperatures (over 110°F/43°C) | Timing belt | Replace every 60,000 miles |
| Regular driving in very low temperatures (under -20°F/-29°C) | Timing belt | Replace every 60,000 miles |
| Trailer towing | Timing belt | Replace every 60,000 miles |
| Dusty driving conditions | Engine air cleaner element | Replace every 15,000 miles (regardless of Minder) |
| High-soot urban driving | Cabin air filter | Replace every 15,000 miles (regardless of Minder) |
| No service message for 12 months | Engine oil | Change at least once per year |
| Every 3 years (independent of Minder) | Brake fluid | Replace regardless of mileage |
| Every 160,000 miles | Idle speed | Inspect |
Owner Guidance on What Can Wait vs. What Cannot
Based on community experience with a 2008 MDX at 91,000 miles:
| Service | Advice |
|---|---|
| Timing belt | "TB service = MID 4 (wait until the car tells you)" — But many recommend sooner; dealer-recommended at 105k or 7 years. |
| Brake fluid | "every 3 years" — Independent of MID. |
| Power steering fluid | "PS fluid = is it dirty? has it ever been changed?" — DIY, can be delayed. |
| Differential & Transfer case | "Diff and Transfer < DIY it! Is very easy to change"—DIY potential. |
| EGR & Intake Cleaning | "If you are not getting any EGR codes don't worry about that". |
At-a-Glance Maintenance Summary
Since the MDX uses the Maintenance Minder system instead of fixed intervals, always follow your vehicle's displayed Maintenance Minder codes:
| Component | Reference Trigger | Maintenance Minder Code |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | When oil life reaches 15% | A |
| Engine oil & filter + full inspection | When MID indicates | B |
| Tire rotation | When MID indicates | 1 |
| Air filters (engine + cabin) | When MID indicates (or 15k severe) | 2 |
| Transmission & transfer fluid | When MID indicates (~30k-60k miles) | 3 |
| Timing belt, spark plugs, valves | When Code 4 appears (~105k miles) | 4 |
| Engine coolant | When MID indicates | 5 |
| Rear differential fluid (SH-AWD) | When MID indicates (or 7.5k/15k severe) | 6 |
| Brake fluid | Every 3 years (independent of codes) | Independent |
| Idle speed | Every 160,000 miles | Independent |
| Major periodic service | Generally every 2 years or 30,000 km | Independent |
Long-Term Ownership Summary
- The timing belt is not negotiable, but the timing is flexible within reason. The Owner's Manual provides no hard time interval; it relies on Code 4. However, given the age of the 2008 MDX (17+ years in 2025), do not delay further if unknown history.
- Brake fluid must be replaced every 3 years regardless of what the MID shows—this is the most important time-based service.
- SH-AWD is a major maintenance consideration for 4WD models. If you live in mountainous areas or tow, follow the 7,500/15,000-mile severe schedule for differential fluid.
- The 3.7L engine may consume oil. Monitor your oil level frequently—consumption can be significant. If the oil gets too low, the navigation screen on tech package models will display a warning; pull over immediately and top up.
- DIY can save significant money. Basic tasks like fluid changes, filters, and differential servicing are achievable with basic tools. As one owner notes: "you can do them all yourself, for under $200 with a small set of sockets, ratchet, and torque wrench".
- Use Honda/Acura-specified fluids:
- ATF: Honda ATF-DW1 only
- Rear differential: Acura AWD DPSF only
- Coolant: Honda Type 2 blue only
- Brake fluid: Honda DOT 3 only
- Engine oil: SAE 5W-20
- Keep maintenance records. Save all receipts as proof of completion, especially for the timing belt service.
- The official factory service manual (P/N 61STX02) covers 2007-2009 MDX models and is available from Helm Inc.
