Reviewed for service schedule clarity.
The 2018 Acura RDX AWD is the final model year of the second generation (2G). It is powered by a 3.5L V6 engine (J35Y6) producing 279 horsepower, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The AWD system is Acura's SH-AWD (Super Handling-All Wheel Drive) .
Unlike older vehicles with fixed schedules, your RDX uses an intelligent Maintenance Minder system. This computer analyzes your driving habits and displays alphanumeric codes precisely when service is due .
> CRITICAL ENGINE NOTE: The 3.5L V6 uses a timing belt, NOT a chain. This is an interference engine. If the belt breaks, the pistons will strike the valves, causing catastrophic engine damage. Replacement is mandatory, not optional .
Key Takeaways
- Follow the Maintenance Minder system, NOT fixed odometer intervals. The vehicle's computer monitors driving conditions and displays alphanumeric codes (A, B, 1-6) when specific services are due. There is no traditional "every 30,000-mile" service schedule .
- The 3.5L V6 uses a timing belt, NOT a chain. Replacement is required at 105,000 miles or 7 years (when Code 4 appears). If you drive regularly in very high temperatures (over 110°F), very low temperatures (under -20°F), or tow a trailer, replace every 60,000 miles .
- SH-AWD rear differential fluid replacement is critical for AWD models (Code 6). If you regularly drive in mountainous areas at very low speeds or tow a trailer, change differential fluid at 7,500 miles, then every 15,000 miles .
- Brake fluid replacement is strictly time‑sensitive. Independent of the Maintenance Minder, replace brake fluid every 3 years regardless of mileage .
- For major periodic service, this should generally be done every 2 years or after 30,000 kilometers (approximately 18,600 miles) .
- Service at a dealer is NOT mandatory to keep your warranties in effect. Maintenance may be performed by any qualified automotive repair establishment .

Timing Belt vs. Chain: The J35Y6 engine uses a timing belt . The water pump is driven by the timing belt and should be replaced at the same time. Code 4 on the Maintenance Minder includes timing belt replacement for this engine.
SH-AWD Fluid Note: The SH-AWD system requires Acura AWD DPSF (Dual Pump System Fluid) for the rear differential . This is NOT the same as standard gear oil.
Transmission Fluid: The 6-speed automatic transmission uses Acura ATF DW-1 .
Understanding the Maintenance Minder System
The 2018 Acura RDX does not have a traditional fixed‑mileage maintenance schedule. Instead, Acura employs a Maintenance Minder system that monitors vehicle operating conditions and calculates when service is required .
How the System Works
When the engine oil life reaches 15%, the system message indicator comes on and the Maintenance Minder screen appears on the multi-information display . The system calculates oil life based on actual driving conditions (speed, temperature, time, and vehicle use).
Based on engine operating conditions, the remaining engine oil life is calculated and displayed as a percentage :
| Displayed Oil Life (%) | Calculated Oil Life (%) |
|---|---|
| 100 | 100 to 91 |
| 90 | 90 to 81 |
| 80 | 80 to 71 |
| 70 | 70 to 61 |
| 60 | 60 to 51 |
| 50 | 50 to 41 |
| 40 | 40 to 31 |
| 30 | 30 to 21 |
| 20 | 20 to 16 |
| 15 | 15 to 11 |
| 10 | 10 to 6 |
| 5 | 5 to 1 |
| 0 | 0 |
Under normal driving conditions, oil changes typically occur between 7,500 and 10,000 miles. Severe conditions could trigger alerts in a range from 3,000-4,999 miles .
Maintenance Minder Messages
| Oil Life Remaining | Message Displayed | Recommended Action |
|---|---|---|
| 15% | Maintenance Due Soon | Service should be scheduled soon |
| 5% | Maintenance Due Now | Maintenance should be performed immediately |
| 0% (Negative Distance) | Maintenance Past Due | Service is overdue—schedule immediately |
Independent (Time-Based) Maintenance Requirements
The following requirements apply independently of the Maintenance Minder system and must be tracked manually :
| Condition | Required Action |
|---|---|
| No maintenance message within 12 months of reset | Change engine oil at least once per year |
| Brake fluid replacement | Every 3 years (independent of mileage) |
| Inspect idle speed | Every 160,000 miles (256,000 km) |
| Valve adjustment | Adjust only if noisy during services A, B, 1, 2, or 3 |
| Driving in dusty conditions | Replace air cleaner element every 15,000 miles (24,000 km) |
| Driving in high‑soot urban areas | Replace dust and pollen filter every 15,000 miles (24,000 km) |
| Mountain driving or towing (transmission) | Change transmission fluid at 60,000 miles, then every 30,000 miles |
| Mountain driving or towing (rear differential – AWD) | Change differential fluid at 7,500 miles, then every 15,000 miles |
| Extreme temperatures or towing (timing belt) | Replace timing belt every 60,000 miles |
| Major periodic service | Every 2 years or after 30,000 km (≈18,600 miles) |
How to Check Maintenance Minder

- Press the INFO (▲/▼) button repeatedly until the engine oil life appears on the multi-information display
- The oil life percentage and due maintenance codes will display
Resetting the Maintenance Minder Display
After performing the required maintenance service, the engine oil life display must be reset. Failure to reset results in the system showing incorrect maintenance intervals .
Reset Procedure:
- Set the power mode to ON (do not start the engine)
- Press the SELECT/RESET button repeatedly until the engine oil life is displayed
- Press and hold the SELECT/RESET button for about 10 seconds until the oil life resets to 100%
> Note: The dealer will reset the engine oil life display after completing required maintenance service. If someone other than a dealer performs maintenance service, reset the Maintenance Minder display yourself .
Maintenance Minder Codes
The Maintenance Minder communicates service needs through alphanumeric codes. A code consists of a main item (A or B) optionally followed by sub‑item numbers (1 through 6) .
Main Item Codes (A, B)
| Code | Required Service |
|---|---|
| A | Replace engine oil |
| B | Replace engine oil and oil filter; inspect front and rear brakes, tie rod ends, steering gearbox, suspension components, driveshaft boots, brake hoses and lines (including ABS/VSA), all fluid levels, exhaust system, fuel lines and connections |
Sub‑Item Codes (1-6)
| Code | Service Description | AWD / Severe Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rotate tires | Check tire pressure and condition |
| 2 | Replace air cleaner element; replace dust and pollen filter; inspect drive belt | Dusty conditions: replace every 15,000 miles. High-soot urban areas: replace filter every 15,000 miles |
| 3 | Replace transmission fluid and transfer case fluid | AWD only – includes transfer case. Severe (mountain/towing): change at 60,000 miles, then every 30,000 miles |
| 4 | Replace spark plugs; replace timing belt and inspect water pump; inspect valve clearance | CRITICAL SERVICE. Severe (extreme temps/towing): replace timing belt every 60,000 miles |
| 5 | Replace engine coolant | — |
| 6 | Replace rear differential fluid | AWD only. Severe (mountain/towing): change at 7,500 miles, then every 15,000 miles |
AWD‑Specific Severe Condition Requirements
From the 2018 RDX Owner's Manual :
Transmission and Transfer Case:
> *"Driving in mountainous areas at very low vehicle speeds or trailer towing results in higher transmission and transfer temperatures. This requires transmission and transfer fluid changes more frequently than recommended by the Maintenance Minder. If you regularly drive your vehicle under these conditions, have the transmission fluid changed at 60,000 miles (100,000 km), then every 30,000 miles (48,000 km)."*
Rear Differential:
> *"Driving in mountainous areas at very low vehicle speeds or trailer towing results in higher level of mechanical (Shear) stress to fluid. This requires differential fluid changes more frequently than recommended by the Maintenance Minder. If you regularly drive your vehicle under these conditions, have the differential fluid changed at 7,500 miles (12,000 km), then every 15,000 miles (24,000 km)."*
Timing Belt (Code 4):
> *"If you drive regularly in very high temperatures (over 110°F, 43°C), in very low temperatures (under -20°F, -29°C), or tow a trailer, replace every 60,000 miles/100,000 km."*
Example Code Combinations
| Displayed Code | Services Required |
|---|---|
| A1 | Oil change + tire rotation |
| B2 | Oil/filter change + comprehensive inspection + air filters + drive belt inspection |
| B3 | Comprehensive service + transmission fluid + transfer case fluid (AWD) |
| B4 | Comprehensive service + timing belt/water pump + spark plugs |
| B6 | Comprehensive service + rear differential fluid (AWD) |
Reference Intervals from AutoCheck
Based on actual vehicle data, the Maintenance Minder typically indicates the following services at these mileage ranges :
| Mileage | Typical Services Indicated |
|---|---|
| 35,000 miles | Maintenance Minder 1 (Rotate Tires) + 2 (Air Filters) + 3 (Automatic Transmission) |
| 40,000-45,000 miles | Maintenance Minder 1 + 2 + 3 |
> Note: These are reference intervals from real vehicle data. Your Maintenance Minder will determine exact timing based on your specific driving conditions.
Engine Oil Change Guidance
Factory Requirements
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Recommended oil | SAE 0W‑20 premium-grade synthetic oil |
| Oil change trigger | Maintenance Minder code A or B (when oil life reaches 15%) |
| Maximum time interval | If no service indicated within 12 months, change oil at least once per year |
| Oil filter | Replace at every oil change (code B includes filter change) |
| Typical intervals | 7,500-10,000 miles under normal driving |
How to Check Engine Oil Level
The 2018 RDX engine oil dipstick has an orange loop handle located in the engine bay :
- Park on level ground and wait at least 3 minutes after engine shutdown
- Pull out the dipstick and wipe completely clean
- Reinsert fully, then remove again
- Oil level should be between the upper and lower marks
Owner Guidance
- Acura Genuine Motor Oil is recommended, though any synthetic oil of the same viscosity grade is acceptable
- Your Acura does not require any oil additives
- Check the engine oil level at least once per month
- The "A" service includes an oil change; "B" service adds the oil filter and comprehensive inspection
- If you observe the oil life percentage and ignore that and never let the oil life reach 15%, the other codes (for other maintenance items) may never show up
Community advice: Oil changes typically occur every 6,000-8,000 miles for most drivers under normal conditions . Air and cabin filter changes are very easy to DIY in a few minutes, saving dealer labor costs .
Timing Belt – The Most Critical Service
The J35Y6 V6 engine requires timing belt replacement on a strict schedule. Your 2018 RDX uses a timing belt, NOT a chain. This is the single most important maintenance item for your 2018 RDX AWD .
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine type | Interference engine—belt failure destroys the engine |
| Replacement trigger | Maintenance Minder code 4 |
| Standard replacement | When Code 4 appears (typically at 105,000 miles) |
| Severe condition interval | If driving regularly in very high temps (over 110°F), very low temps (under -20°F), or towing: replace every 60,000 miles |
| Water pump | Replace with timing belt – Code 4 includes "replace timing belt and inspect water pump" |
| Time‑based recommendation (age) | Many specialists recommend replacement at 7 years regardless of mileage due to rubber degradation |
Why Timing Belt Replacement Is Critical
The J35Y6 engine is an interference engine. If the timing belt breaks, the pistons will strike the valves, resulting in bent valves, damaged pistons, and typically requiring complete engine replacement.
As noted in the Acura community: *"You will likely not have to do anything major until about 100k miles, where timing belt is due"* . However, the severe condition interval explicitly requires replacement every 60,000 miles for those who drive regularly in very high temperatures (over 110°F), very low temperatures (under -20°F), or tow a trailer .
The Age Factor – Critical for 2018 RDX Owners
The 2018 RDX is now 7-8 years old (as of 2025/2026). Age‑based replacement is an important consideration. Timing belts degrade over time due to environmental factors like ozone, temperature extremes, and humidity.
> *"The timing belt is a much debated item. Generally the J35 engine has a recommended interval of 7 yrs / 105K miles"* .
Owner Guidance for Timing Belt Service (The "Full Job")
When replacing the timing belt, replace these components simultaneously due to overlapping labor :
- Timing belt itself
- Timing belt tensioner
- Water pump (driven by the timing belt; replacing together saves future labor)
- Drive belts (serpentine/accessory belt)
- Engine coolant (requires draining to replace water pump)
- Spark plugs (Code 4 includes spark plug replacement)
- Valve clearance inspection (Code 4 includes this)
Approximate Cost Expectation
Timing belt replacement costs vary by region and shop. Community estimates:
- Independent shop: $600-$1,000
- Acura dealer: $1,000-$1,500
A major service package including fluids, plugs, and belts is typically $600-$1,000 at a dealer, potentially less at an independent Acura specialist .
Brake Fluid Replacement
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Specified fluid | Acura Heavy Duty Brake Fluid DOT 3 |
| Replacement requirement | Every 3 years, independent of the Maintenance Minder |
| Check frequency | Monthly |
| Temporary substitute | DOT 3 or DOT 4 from a sealed container |
| DOT 5 warning | NOT compatible – never use DOT 5 fluid (silicone-based) |
Why it's critical: Brake fluid is hygroscopic – it absorbs moisture from the air over time . This moisture lowers the fluid's boiling point (causing potential brake fade under hard braking) and promotes internal corrosion of the brake system.
Owner Guidance: A complete system flush (draining old fluid from the bleeder screw at each caliper) is required. Topping off the reservoir is not sufficient. Check the brake fluid level monthly and keep it between MIN and MAX marks .
For a 2018 RDX, the brake fluid should have been replaced at 3‑year intervals (2021, 2024). If this service has not been performed, it is overdue.
> From the Owner's Manual: *"Independent of the Maintenance Minder information, replace the brake fluid every 3 years"* .
European market documentation recommends brake fluid replacement every 2 years as a more conservative interval .
Transmission & Transfer Case Service (AWD Only)
The 2018 RDX AWD requires both transmission fluid and transfer case fluid to be replaced. This is part of a Code 3 service .
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Specified transmission fluid | Honda ATF DW-1 |
| Replacement trigger | Maintenance Minder code 3 |
| Standard interval | Follow Maintenance Minder (typically 60,000-100,000 miles) |
| Severe condition interval | If regularly driving in mountainous areas at very low speeds or towing: change at 60,000 miles, then every 30,000 miles |
| Transfer case fluid | Replace with transmission fluid (same service, Code 3) |
| AWD specific | Your AWD model has transfer case fluid that must be replaced with the transmission fluid |
AutoCheck Reference: Real vehicle data shows Maintenance Minder 3 (Automatic Transmission) being indicated at 35,000-45,000 miles .
Critical Warning: Using any transmission fluid other than Honda ATF DW-1 can damage the transmission.
Owner Guidance: The proper method for a complete fluid exchange is the drain and refill method (or the "3x method"—drain, fill, drive through all gears, repeat three times). Do not use a power flush machine.
Community advice: *"Transmission fluid changes are around 30K (also really easy to do on the RDX)"* . Community experience suggests more frequent changes than the minder might indicate for longevity.
Fluid Level Check Procedure :
- Park vehicle on level ground and start the engine
- Wait until the radiator fan turns on, then turn off the engine
- Wait 60-90 seconds after stopping the engine before checking the level
- Remove the dipstick (yellow handle) and wipe clean
- Reinsert fully, then remove and check the level
- Level should be between the upper and lower marks
SH-AWD Rear Differential Service (AWD‑Specific)
The 2018 RDX AWD has a rear differential that requires periodic fluid changes. This is critical for AWD models only. The Maintenance Minder will display Code 6 when this service is due .
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Replacement trigger | Maintenance Minder code 6 |
| Fluid type | Acura AWD DPSF (Dual Pump System Fluid) – do not use standard gear oil |
| Standard interval | Follow Maintenance Minder |
| Severe condition interval | 7,500 miles, then every 15,000 miles |
Severe Condition Requirement – Important Note
From the 2018 RDX Owner's Manual :
> *"Driving in mountainous areas at very low vehicle speeds or trailer towing results in higher level of mechanical (Shear) stress to fluid. This requires differential fluid changes more frequently than recommended by the Maintenance Minder. If you regularly drive your vehicle under these conditions, have the differential fluid changed at 7,500 miles (12,000 km), then every 15,000 miles (24,000 km)."*
Community advice: *"Rear diff I believe is around ~15K"* . This aligns with the severe condition interval.
Fluid Warning: Use only Acura AWD DPSF (Dual Pump System Fluid). Do not use VTM‑4 fluid, standard gear oil, or ATF—these will damage the SH‑AWD clutches. The 2013-2018 RDX AWD is known for "AWD system fluid neglect" as a frequent wear item, making regular changes especially important .
Drive Belt & Air Filters
| Component | Replacement Trigger | Severe Conditions Note |
|---|---|---|
| Engine air cleaner element | Maintenance Minder code 2 | If driving in dusty conditions: replace every 15,000 miles (24,000 km) |
| Cabin air filter (dust and pollen filter) | Maintenance Minder code 2 | If driving in high‑soot urban areas: replace every 15,000 miles (24,000 km) |
| Drive belt (serpentine belt) | Maintenance Minder code 2 (inspect) | Replace if cracked, frayed, or glazed; typically every 60,000-100,000 miles |
Owner Guidance: Both filters are inexpensive and can be replaced without special tools . The cabin air filter is typically located behind the glove box; replacing it annually improves interior air quality and HVAC performance. A clogged engine air filter can reduce fuel economy and engine performance.
> *"Air and cabin filters are typically every 15,000 miles, oil/oil filter changes are probably 6-8,000 miles or so. Air and cabin filter changes are so easy on Acuras you do it yourself in a few minutes"* — AcuraZine community .
Note on Timing Belt vs. Drive Belt: Your 2018 RDX has a timing belt (replaced at Code 4) and a drive belt/serpentine belt (inspected at Code 2). These are different components. The drive belt powers accessories like the alternator, A/C compressor, and power steering pump—it does need periodic inspection and replacement when worn .
Spark Plug Replacement & Valve Adjustment
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Replacement trigger | Maintenance Minder code 4 |
| Reference interval | Approximately 105,000 miles (with timing belt service) |
| Type | Iridium long-life plugs (OEM-specified NGK or Denso) |
| Quantity | 6 plugs |
| Valve clearance | Inspect when spark plugs are replaced; adjust only if they are noisy |
Owner Guidance: Replace spark plugs during the timing belt service—the labor overlaps significantly. Use only OEM‑specified plugs. The J35Y6 engine uses mechanical lifters (not hydraulic). While the manual states "adjust only if noisy," many Acura specialists recommend checking clearances at the 100,000-mile mark regardless. Tight exhaust valves may not make noise even when dangerously tight.
> *"Adjust the valves during services A, B, 1, 2, or 3 if they are noisy"* — 2018 Acura RDX Owner's Manual .
Also required: Inspect idle speed every 160,000 miles (256,000 km) .
Coolant Service
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Replacement trigger | Maintenance Minder code 5 |
| Reference interval | Approximately 105,000-120,000 miles or 7-10 years |
| Coolant type | Acura Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 (blue, premixed 50/50) |
| Check frequency | Check coolant level in the reserve tank at each fuel fill |
Owner Guidance: Do not use generic green coolant. Honda/Acura Type 2 coolant is specifically formulated for aluminum engine components. For a 2018 RDX that has never had a coolant flush, it is likely due (7-8 years). Coolant replacement is often done with the timing belt service since the water pump replacement requires draining the system.
> *"Fresh coolant protects the turbocharged 2.0L or V6 engine from overheating and corrosion. Replace around 100K miles if it hasn't been done recently"* .
Power Steering Fluid
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Fluid type | Honda Power Steering Fluid (preferred) |
| Inspection | Check for leaks regularly |
| Common issue | Power steering leaks are a known problem on this generation RDX |
Known Issue: The 2013-2018 RDX is known for power steering leaks . Inspect the power steering system regularly for fluid loss. The 2018 Acura RDX is also known for engine mount vibration, control arm bushing wear, brake wear, alternator replacement, and suspension struts as common wear items at higher mileage .
Suspension & Steering
At higher mileage (75,000-100,000+ miles), the 2018 RDX may need attention to suspension components :
| Component | Common Wear |
|---|---|
| Control arm bushings | Known wear item on this generation |
| Suspension struts | Can cause uneven tire wear or clunking over bumps |
| Tie rod ends | Inspect during B service |
Symptoms like uneven tire wear or clunking over bumps signal it's time for suspension inspection .
Brake System
| Component | Typical Interval |
|---|---|
| Brake pads | Inspect during B service |
| Brake rotors | Replace with pads as needed |
| Brake fluid flush | Every 3 years (independent of minder) |
By 100,000 miles, many RDXs will need new brake pads and possibly rotors, along with a careful check of calipers and parking brake mechanisms .
Severe Driving Conditions Summary
The following severe condition requirements are explicitly stated in the 2018 RDX Owner's Manual :
| Condition | Component | Required Action |
|---|---|---|
| Mountain driving at very low speeds or towing | Transmission + transfer case fluid | Change at 60,000 miles, then every 30,000 miles |
| Mountain driving at very low speeds or towing | Rear differential fluid (AWD) | Change at 7,500 miles, then every 15,000 miles |
| Regular driving in very high temps (over 110°F/43°C) | Timing belt | Replace every 60,000 miles |

| High‑soot urban driving | Cabin air filter | Replace every 15,000 miles |
| No service message for 12 months | Engine oil | Change at least once per year |
| Every 3 years (independent of Minder) | Brake fluid | Replace regardless of mileage |
| Every 160,000 miles | Idle speed | Inspect |
> *"There is one service that is time based (brake fluid) and one service that 'may' be time based (oil change at least every year even if the MMI doesn't call for it yet because of low mileage)"* — AcuraZine community .
Resetting the Maintenance Minder Display
After performing the required maintenance service, the engine oil life display must be reset. Failure to reset results in the system showing incorrect maintenance intervals, which can lead to serious mechanical problems .
Reset Procedure:
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON (II) position (do not start the engine)
- Press the SELECT/RESET button repeatedly until the engine oil life is displayed
- Press and hold the SELECT/RESET button for about 10 seconds until the remaining engine oil life reset mode appears
- Select "RESET" by pressing the INFO (▲/▼) button, then press SELECT/RESET to confirm
- The oil life display returns to 100%
> Note: The dealer will reset the Maintenance Minder display after completing required maintenance service. If someone other than a dealer performs maintenance service, reset the Maintenance Minder display yourself .
Monthly & Pre‑Drive Checks
As outlined in the 2018 RDX Owner's Manual, perform these checks regularly :
| Frequency | Check Item |
|---|---|
| Monthly | Automatic transmission fluid level |
| Monthly | Brake fluid level |
| Monthly | Tire pressure (including spare); examine tread for wear and foreign objects |
| Monthly | Exterior lights operation |
| Every 6 months | Wiper blade condition |
| Pre‑drive / Before long trips | Engine oil level; windshield washer fluid; tires for damage; fluid leaks under vehicle |
Daily inspections should be performed before long-distance trips, when washing the vehicle, or when refueling .
Service at Independent Shops – Important
Important: Acura explicitly states that service at a dealer is not mandatory to keep your warranties in effect :
> *"Maintenance, replacement, or repair of emissions control devices and systems may be done by any automotive repair establishment or individuals using parts that are 'certified' to EPA standards."*
According to state and federal regulations, failure to perform maintenance on the maintenance main items marked with # will not void your emissions warranties. However, all maintenance services should be performed in accordance with the intervals indicated by the driver information interface .
Keep all receipts as proof of completion. After performing maintenance, update the records in the separate maintenance booklet .
At-a-Glance Maintenance Schedule
Since the RDX uses the Maintenance Minder system, always follow your vehicle's displayed codes. The table below shows reference intervals based on the 2018 Owner's Manual and community experience:

| Major periodic service | Every 2 years or 30,000 km (≈18,600 miles) | Independent |
Long‑Term Ownership Summary for 2018 RDX AWD
- The timing belt is not negotiable – and the 2018 RDX has a timing belt, not a chain. The J35Y6 engine will self‑destruct if the belt breaks. Replace when Code 4 appears (105,000 miles or 7 years, whichever comes first) . If you drive in severe conditions (extreme temperatures or towing), replace every 60,000 miles. The water pump should always be replaced at the same time.
